I started with 6 skeins of Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn–2 each of Ivory, Mid-Green, and Brown–and ended with all of this:
In total, I was able to make a 36″ square Log Cabin Squares Baby Blanket, a Baby Bobbi Bear, an Elijah, a Kai Cable Sweater, and an Umbilical Cord Hat from only 6 skeins of yarn. If you include the basket (50% off plus July 4th additional 10% savings-woohoo) and sales tax, this entire set cost me $25.87 to make!!! I suppose you could add a couple dollars for the stuffing, but even with that, I think this has got to be the most cost effective gift basket I’ve ever seen. 🙂 I can’t wait to see what it brings in at the auction in November! I can definitely see this being made in gender specific colors or other variations of neutral. Maybe even a black, white, and red combo since those are the colors babies supposedly see first. Hmmm… So many choices!
I have a couple of other things I plan to knit for the auction, but nothing quite as cute as this (if I do say so myself.) I might even go so far as making a baptismal shawl &/or robe. I’m not sure how best to package a shawl like that since space is at a premium at the auction and I can’t really hang it up on the wall or anything. I’ve been asked to make a Harry Potter-themed scarf/hat set to go along with a book set to be purchased, so I’m working on that now. I’d love to make so much, but school starts next Wednesday and my spare/knitting time is going to be at more of a premium than it already is.
Oh, I also finished a pair of socks for my friend Meredith. She’s REALLY pregnant with her first baby (the gender of which she refused to find out for me! The gall!) and I wanted to make something for her.
Pattern: Basic cuff-down sock from the Handy Book of Patterns
Yarn: Cherry Tree Hill Supersock Potlucks, Jewels
Started: August 13, 2008
Finished: August 20, 2008
I hope she likes them! Honestly, I love the Cherry Tree Hill sock yarn (is it a Louet base?) but this particular skein bled like a mo-fo. I ended up having to boil the socks in a big glug of vinegar water for a long while before they finally didn’t bleed profusely. I’m still a bit concerned over her being able to machine wash them with anything other than the blackest clothing in her home. At least I found out ahead of time so I can warn her. She’s due on the 28th, which coincides nicely with my son’s return to school, so I’m holding hope that baby will wait until after that to make an appearance so I can see her preggers. (She’s just completed her second year of medical school, so between that and my 3 kiddos, we’ve not been able to connect much) I can’t wait to meet the little one, too!
Take care and enjoy your upcoming weekend. 🙂
